Bowron Lake Provincial Park - 121,600 hectares

System of six major lakes; Indianpoint, Isaac, Lanezi, Sandy, Spectacle and Bowron Lakes.  Connected by the Cariboo and Bowron Rivers, and other smaller lakes and streams and several portages.

The canoe circuit is 116km.  Ideally the circuit can be completed in six or seven days, not including rest days or storms.

Registration Centre to Isaac Lake
Begin at the Registration Centre travelling, clockwise, with the water flow, with a 2.4km portage to Kibbee Creek. The creek takes you out to Kibbee Lake, 2.4km across, then another portage of 2km to Indianpoint Lake, 6.4km across. The east lake of Indianpoint Lake, turns marshy, but a marked channel leads to a slough and the portage trail to the West Arm of Isaac Lake, 6.8km long, and the Main Arm is 31.2km long.  When canoeing Isaac Lake, paddle close to shore, as high winds and rough water may occur at any time.

Isaac River
Both a Portage and canoeing the Isaac River. Isaac Lake to McLeary Lake is 2.8km of which about 1.6km can be canoed. Once you arrive at McLeary Lake, take the hiking trail up on either side of the Isaac River to the falls. Here the river flows 11 Metres (36 feet) over a ledge, to form this natural site.

McLeary Lake to Unna Lake
McLeary Lake is only 1.2 km (.7mi) across, next is the Cariboo River. Be prepared at all times while on the Cariboo River, as it’s swift and has sweepers (tree trunks extending out from the bank into the current). This part of your trip, the Cariboo River, McLeary Lake to Lanezi Lake is 5.2km (3.2mi) long. When canoeing Lanezi Lake which is 14.8km (9.1mi) , the inside perimeter is the route most take and there are few places to land along the shore. The Cariboo River, from Lanezi Lake to Sandy Lake is a short canoe trip of 1.2km (.7mi) and to canoe across Sandy Lake is only 4.8km(2.9mi). As you follow the Cariboo River, Sandy Lake to Babcock Creek it’s a distance of 3.6km (2.2mi). Just before you get to Babcock Creek, watch for the narrow entrance to Unna Lake. Do not proceed down river past this point, instead walk along the trail to the viewpoint and see the 24 metre high (78.7ft) Cariboo Falls.

Unna Lake to Bowron Lake
Unna Lake
is a great place to stop and relax, enjoy the crystal clear water and sandy shores. Babcock Creek is too shallow for paddling, so a portage is required.  Babcock Lake is only 2.8km (1.7mi) across, and between Babcock Lake and Spectacle Lakes the two portages are short and easy. Spectacle Lake including Swan Lake is a 12.4km (7.6mi) trip, and it’s easy going from here on. Canoeing the Bowron River, from Spectacle/Swan Lake is an easy 4km (2.2mi) trip and Bowron Lake is 7.2km (4.4mi). Afternoon wind squalls are quite regular on Bowron Lake, so it’s best to canoe the east side of the lake. No camping areas are available along the shore of Bowron Lake, so, the end of the circuit landing point is a plainly visible float at the Bowron Lake Campground.

Comments from others who have paddled it.

S.Grant -Vancouver B.C.

If the weather is cooperative, I'd plan to spend one night
somewhere down the east side of Isaac Lake.  No sense rushing down
that big lake in a day.
There is not a campsite 'per se' at McLeary Lake.  There is a cabin,
but there is a high probability it will be occupied.  There is only
very limited tent space near the cabin.  The alternative is the
campsite at the end of the Isaac Falls portage, but it is the most
dark, damp and cold on the circuit.  If you plan to stay in any
cabin, mouse traps are essential to being able to sleep.  Take at
least 3 traps and count on tending them all evening to get the
numbers of mice down.
Turner Creek along Lanezi Lake is a fine place, but may be a bit
crowded for your preferences.  If you want things quieter,
there are three small sites farther along Lanezi.
Sandy Lake is a fine place to dwaddle, or camp.  Cariboo Falls is
a short hike, and a side trip from Una Lake, as opposed to being
along the route as is Isaac Falls.  Pats Point is another choice
site, and the route can easily be finished from there in a half
day.
The last half of the circuit has the best weather, but also 2-3
times as many people as the first half.  Don't count on catching
any fish.
If you don't like strong tailwinds, it's best to be done with
Bowron Lake by noon.
Bear River Mercantile's rental canoe carts are better but bulkier
than the ones offered by Beckers Lodge and Bowron Lake Lodge.
There is no need to take rigging to hang your food, since there
are bear lockers everywhere.  Do take an axe and maybe a
swede saw.
Best chances of seeing moose are on the west side of Pavich Island,
though I hesitate to mention this because I think they go there to
get away from the paddlers on the other side of the island.
