The Mitchell is perfect for
3 day (camping) trip in tandem canoes from Slalom Rapid to Final Fling. A few
rapids you might portage depending on skills: Slalom Rapid, Dam Wall and the Ampitheatre. All rapids are easily portageable,
easy to scout, easy to know you are approaching. Lots of flat
water between rapids. Good campsites. You'll usually see plenty of local
wildlife: goannas, wombats etc.

Paddling in Melbourne:
* Yarra river, grade 1-2 &
flat water as you get closer to the city centre
* Maribyrnong River- flat flat flat - smell closer to city
centre - flows into Yarra
just
before the bay.
* lakes - several small lakes -
small are reasonably pretty - none more than 2-3
Km
long/wide.
Paddling In
* Murray River (
- 3000km long from Albury (NSW) to Adelaide (SA). Albury - Swanhill is the best
paddle.
* Glenelg river - all flat, good
camping
*Barwon (I have not paddled it)
flat
Other river are OK for WW day trips:
Thompson (very pretty, grade 1-2 if water)
Big River
King (grade 2+, 1x easy grade)
Ovens
Kiewa - below Bogong
lake (above is a grade 4+ creek)
Mitta mitta
- grade 2-3 (well worth thinking about), easy in an open canoe if you are
good.
Mitchell - good grade 2-3, flat between a few rapids (water
level??)
These rivers are NOT ok in a canoe (due to small size/ no water)
Howqua
Goulburn upper & lower
lower Mitta
Jamison
Buffalo - nice. often low water,
therefore too low for C2
